Lemon Vanitas takes up the still-life tradition of the same name, where beauty and decay sit in the same frame. Lemons fill a glass dish — some cut open, their flesh bright and wet, others already darkening and beginning to turn. Beside them an hourglass and a knife: time measured, the cut already made. Painted in transparent watercolour, working from observation in hard, raking light that throws long shadows across the tiled floor. The fruit will spoil and the light will move; my subject is the brief moment before either happens.
